Movie Review: Wonder Woman

Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) aka Wonder Woman blazed into theaters Friday and kicked ass. From machine gun smashing to the $100 million debut, Wonder Woman [insert 'wonder' pun] on and off the screen and it's a pretty big deal.

Movie Review - Steve's Take: Power Rangers

If you missed J's review of Power Rangers, be sure to check it out here. I was able to watch the movie Sunday and, well, here are my thoughts.

Year Review: Favorite things of 2016

While some people can't wait for 2016 to #GTFOH, if you're reading this then you're blessed to still be alive. So as 2017 dawns upon us, I'd like to take a moment to reflect on a few of my favorite things at Steve and J from 2016:

5) Album Review: Silhouette Of A Sunkken City

2016 was the year of Trap Music...or is it Mumble Rap now? Any who, Gucci was out of jail, 21 Savage was stunting on his ex b*tch, and sending an unsolicited Friend Request to just ONE woman living in Georgia entitled you to boast having "broads in Atlanta". To everyone that says Rap/Hip Hop has lost its way, I'm here to tell you that you aren't looking (listening?) hard enough.

4) VOLTRON Week

Celebrating: Steve Young

(1942 - 2016)
I'm not going to insult your Googling capabilities by copy-pasting Steve Young's bio from Wikipedia but if you listen to classic rock such as the Eagles then Steve Young is someone you know that you don't know you even know. The Eagles sung a song live song titled "Seven Bridges Road" which, depending on the recording, they introduced as a song they "learned from a fellow named Steve Young". Yup, this is that Steve Young.

VOLTRON Week Day 7: Pop Culture

Back cover of Blaze magazine issue #2
Voltron is everyone's favorite undocumented immigrant from the 80's - you hear that Donald Trump! He has permeated United States pop culture more than the Smurfs, GI Joe, and I even dare say Transformers. Yup, I said it: Voltron is more influential than Transformers. Case and point: Optimus Prime is the announcer for Voltron Defender of the Universe. Drops mic. Of course that's just the voice actor Peter Cullen but who's the announcer of your life? Your own voice in your head that you're reading this blog to? Lame.

VOLTRON Week Day 6: Enemies

Today's the day! Today is June 10 - the day Voltron: Legendary Defender is available for streaming on Netflix! So Voltron Week is done, no? No! Who the heck is Voltron fighting? And why is he fighting them? Grab a seat, sit down, and relax before you jump over to Netflix so you'll be in the know for Legendary Defender!

Virtually no insight is given as to why Planet Arus and Planet Doom are at odds so it can only be assumed that their kings, King Alfor (deceased) and King Zarkon, respectively, didn't respect each other. So this beef has been hyped Good vs Evil proportions to give us fodder for one of the most iconic cartoons of the 80's.

Just as with Voltron's weapons, I'm going of the memory of the episodes that I actually saw but check out Voltron Central for the full rundown of enemies in the Far Universe.

VOLTRON Week Day 5: Weapons

Speak softly and carry a big stick. - Teddy Roosevelt
Voltron's weapon arsenal is where Legendary Defender can take the most liberties and really change up the super bot for the better. So while Defender of the Universe has a myriad of attacks, as documented on Voltron Central, I'll just stick with the ones I actually saw for myself while watching the cartoon.

VOLTRON Week Day 4: Robot

So now that we have established the pilots, what the heck are they flying? Lions. They're flying mechanical lions. And what do flying mechanical lions assemble? A giant humanoid super robot. Perfectly legit, right? Well, that's the advantage of the "super robot" sub-genre of anime - the physics doesn't have to make sense nor be explained so just go with it. Like cosmic inflation of the Big Bang theory violating the speed of light - just go with it.

VOLTRON Week Day 3: Pilots

Crazy kids
Voltron is Mecha anime involving robots being piloted by humans - oftentimes kids/teenagers. Now, how do you get five teenagers - 4 boys and 1 girl - to live in close quarters, working together as a team without killing each other over the girl? Everyone stays in their own lane; that's how. So here are the 5+1 major archetypes usually associated with any team dynamic in a cartoon or anime:

VOLTRON Week Day 2: Origins - Voltron vs. Go Lion

Go Lion: King of Beasts
Voltron: Defender of the Universe is the American flavor of the Japanese Go Lion: King of Beasts. And since you can't know where you're going if you don't know where you came from, here's the Mech Bots' side-by-side history review in 1 video produced by Steve and J's brother from another YouTube Channel.

Not really.

VOLTRON Week Day 1: Netflix Preview

Welcome to Voltron Week on Steve and J TV! Declared so because Voltron is the #2 reason why being an 80s baby is the bees-knees (#1 is Candy Cigarettes, if you're wondering). This Friday, June 10, all the 2000 and 2010 babies will rediscover greatness so I'm letting my inner child out his corner to nerd all week about the OG Defender of the Universe.

R.I.P. Muhammad Ali (1942 - 2016)

(1942 - 2016)
Former Heavy Weight Champion Muhammad Ali died Friday, June 3, 2016 at the age of 74.

Rest In Power.

R.I.P. Billy Paul (1934 - 2016)

(1934 - 2016)
Grammy Award winning artist Billy Paul passed away on April 24, 2016. He's best known for his hit, "Me and Mrs. Jones" but I'll remember him for his song, "War of the Gods" because it was more like a prayer than a song - if you could get over the whole 'Lucifer' part, that is.

'God' is just a title.
It's like calling somebody father,
preacher, president or general.
Allah, Buddha, Hare Krishna.
Jehovah, just to mention a few.
Some people even call, call Jesus 'God' too.

Love, Peace and Eternal Life
Is a reward
To anyone who knocks on your doors

There's only one god that's true.
And all the name's are not the same.
One day the people of the world
will know your good name.
You are the strong
and you are the mighty.
I hope I'm with you
When they start the fighting.
The War of the Gods

You certainly know His good name now. Rest In Peace.

R.I.P. Prince (1958 - 2016)

(1958 - 2016)

One week after his Atlanta, GA 'Piano & A Microphone' show, Prince Rogers Nelson passed away on April 21, 2016. The world of music and entertainment lost an icon who defined a generation of music. Thankfully, I gave my wife the pleasure of seeing him in concert for the first and last time.

I Watched Blake Griffin Handle Justin Bieber

Disclaimer:  Everything you read here may or may not have happened.  This post is merely for grins and giggles and probably didn't really happen.

Blake moments before Bieber's shirtless meltdown
I was there to see the whole thing unfold.  It was rather impressive.  I had just finished a morning run and decided to stop in at the Starbucks close to my apartment when I noticed an unassuming man sitting in the corner enjoying what appeared to be a warm beverage.  There were several other guests scattered around reading news papers and playing with iPads.

On the TLC Tip

So I will keep this simple...  I totally missed the premier of the Bio Pic, Crazy, Sexy Cool: The TLC Story, and just had a chance to watch it tonight.  All I have to say is WOW!  If you haven't had a chance to catch it, you can find it in VH1's rotation on any given night and I must say, it is a must-see.
Yes, the acting is a bit campy at times, but Lil Mama earned my respect as an actress in her portrayal of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes.

Agents of Shield: The Review Marvel Fans Won't Like

Before I allow my emotions to get involved in my review of Marvel's new series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., I need to set the record straight on a few things.
